During their QSO the suggestion was made to organize a net for both the United States and Canada for the purpose of communicating with the widespread missionary family of Seventh-day Adventists throughout the world. It was discovered at this time that an Adventist radio amateur in the area of the General Conference, the governing body of the worldwide church, had just earned his ham license for just this purpose. That person was Ed Peterson, K3LJP. Soon after this QSO, a net began operating with Barney, W4STU, as net control. From that small beginning, the nets, sponsored by the Adventist Amateur Radio Association International, have grown to several, as listed on the AARAI Web site. ![](https://storage.ghost.io/c/14/4b/144b29aa-0f5a-437b-9aff-2fe3d6807aac/content/images/2026/07/5136560.jpg) Ed Peterson, K3LJP - pastor, youth leader, and educational director. Ed has been considered the "Father of Adventist Amateur Radio." ### Nets The nets are divided into three main groups: Worldwide, Regional, and North American. The worldwide net has two nets on Sunday and a third net meets Monday, Wednesday, and Friday. The regional nets are all managed by hams outside the United States. From South Africa, the Caribbean, and the Far East, Adventists communicate with others. Never are the nets exclusively for only Seventh-day Adventists; all other licensed radio amateurs are welcome. The North American nets operate by geographical regions and/or time zones. Three of these nets are Bible Study nets, and meet each early morning, seven days a week. Some of the other nets meet only on a certain day of the week. ### Membership There are over 2,500 licensed amateurs listed in the Association's directory, including hams licensed outside the United States. It is probable that some Adventist church member-hams are not listed. Who are the people who make up the membership of the Adventist Amateur Radio Association International? Physicians, college and university professors, contractors, engineers, pastors, business owners, nurses, radio and television evangelists, administrative assistants, homemakers, retirees—people from all "walks of life." ### Officers The Adventist Amateur Radio Association International officers are elected for a five-year term. Currently, the elected officers are president, secretary/treasurer, and PR secretary. There is a group of people listed as "special representatives," and they include the AARAI news editor, an ambassador-at-large, the QSO party coordinator, the Don F. Neufeld Award coordinator, e-mail directory editor, disaster preparedness committee, and others. ### Special Events In February each year, the AARAI conducts a QSO Party, a contest to work as many different Adventist operated stations in the U.S., Canada, and throughout the world. The coordinator is Dick Sowler, W8FEM. Contacts made with stations outside of North America give more points, and using low power (under 200 watts) also gives a multiplier. The rules specify that contacts count only if the contacts are with Adventists or people who routinely check into any Bible study net. The Don F. Neufeld Award originated in 1988\. It is named after the late Don F. Neufeld, W3ZS, avid pioneer Adventist ham and denominational worker. It is given to an amateur radio operator who is deemed to have made a significant contribution to the cause of Adventist amateur radio. The first award recipient was Ed Peterson, K3LJP. Other recipients have been Guy Welsh, W6ZTY; Mel Northrup, KA0CBZ; Harold Richards, WD6BDZ; Don Starkey, K7NHR; Al Rhodes, KR7P; David Martin, W7TP; Barbara, WB6QDK & Rodney, WB6QDN Benson; and Sid Kettner, VE7LLU. Al Liske, KA7Z, is the award coordinator. ![](https://storage.ghost.io/c/14/4b/144b29aa-0f5a-437b-9aff-2fe3d6807aac/content/images/2026/07/hmsseniorforwebsite.jpg) HMS Richards, WD6BDZ, founder of [Voice of Prophecy](https://www.voiceofprophecy.com/?ref=aarai.net) Silent key Pastor Harold Richards, WD6BDZ, of Glendale, California, was one of the ambassadors-at-large. A former director/speaker for the Voice of Prophecy radio broadcast before his retirement, Harold was well known among ham circles worldwide. His travels took him to many areas of the world where he met with local hams and encouraged them to become active in the nets operated by the Adventist Amateur Radio Association. Harold's family has many hams, including his wife, Mary, KA6DOE, and other family members. Walt Bolinger, N6UX, from Texas, a retired college teacher and also registrar at Loma Linda University, has helped to set up broadcast transmitters and antennas in Italy, Central America, and KSDA, the high-power, shortwave station on Guam. He did all this after he retired. Silent key Guy Welch, W6ZTY, of Visalia, California, was one of the founders of the West Coast Bible Study Group, which has been continuously on the air each day at 6 a.m. for over 40 years. He was the moderator for the Bible study group almost since its beginning. ### A Unifying Media In preparation for disaster service, each geographic area of the church has the Adventist Community Services (ACS), an organization registered with FEMA and the American Red Cross, for working to aid the victims of disasters, whether earthquake, fire, flood, hurricane, or tornado. Ham radio is included as an important function for emergency communication and coordination of activities. When Hurricane Andrew hit several communities in southern Florida in August of 1992, the Greater Collegedale Adventist Radio Club was contacted for help. Ten club members spent a week in Florida assisting with communication at four Adventist churches. The AARAI and its many radio nets that operate from stations around the world is a unifying media and also keeps overseas families in contact with their loved ones at home. ### About AARAI URL: https://aarai.net/about-2/ Last updated: 2025-02-05T03:52:07.000Z --- In the early 1960's, and quite by accident, Barney McLarty, M.D., W4STU, Memphis, Tennessee, met on a ham band with some of his Adventist friends. Neufeld Award URL: https://aarai.net/neufeld-award/ Last updated: 2025-02-05T03:54:26.000Z --- The Don F. Neufeld Award was initiated in 1988\. The award was designed by the Adventist Amateur Radio Association International to help promote excellence and participation in Adventist amateur radio. The award gives recognition to Adventist amateur radio operators who, in their ham radio activity, have made a significant contribution to the cause of Adventist amateur radio. The purpose of the award is not only to give recognition to outstanding individuals but also to help with the promotion and recognition of the contribution of Adventist amateur radio to the Amateur radio community and to society as a whole. The award is named after the late Don F. Neufeld, W3ZS. Don was an avid ham radio operator who obtained his license in Canada at a young age. He was 15 when he received his first ham radio license. Don was a pioneer in Adventist ham radio and spent his total working career as an employee of the Seventh-day Adventist denomination. Don's working career spanned everything from working as a professor of theology at Canadian Union College, major writing contributor to the Seventh-day Adventist Bible Commentary and to serving as an associate editor of the Adventist Review. Don remained interested and active in ham radio until the time of his death, March 3, 1980\. In fact, he left several unfinished ham projects on his basement workbench when he died. That’s exactly what ham radio (a.k.a. amateur radio) lets you do! The Pathfinder program has an awesome **"Radio" honor** that introduces you to the world of wireless communication. And guess what? It’s not just about chatting—it’s about **building cool skills, helping your community, and even being ready for emergencies**. You have **two** ways to get this honor: **Option 1: Get Your Amateur Radio License!** - Study some basic electronics, radio operating rules, and safety guidelines. - Take and pass the **Technician Class Amateur Radio License** test. - Boom! Now you’re legally allowed to talk to people on amateur radio frequencies! (Yes, this includes people **worldwide**.) Detailed requirements can be found on this [Pathfinder Wiki](https://wiki.pathfindersonline.org/w/AY%5FHonors/Radio?ref=aarai.net). **Option 2: The No-License Route** - If getting a license isn’t your thing, you can complete **15 alternative requirements** instead. - You’ll learn about radio waves, the **phonetic alphabet** (you know, Alpha, Bravo, Charlie…) and the basics of how radios work. - These alternative requirements are outlined by the [General Conference Youth Ministries](https://www.gcyouthministries.org/honor/radio/?ref=aarai.net). **Why Bother? What’s in It for You?** **Benefits of Earning the Radio Honor:** - **Skill Development:** Pathfinders gain technical expertise in radio operations, electronics, and communication protocols. - **Community Service:** Licensed amateur radio operators can assist in emergency communications during disasters, providing a valuable service to their communities. - **Global Connection:** Ham radio offers the opportunity to communicate with individuals worldwide, fostering a sense of global camaraderie. - **Personal Growth:** The process of studying for the license and engaging in radio operations builds discipline, confidence, and problem-solving skills. **Ham Radio in Action: Real-World Fun** In North America, lots of Pathfinder clubs work with local amateur radio groups, giving you a chance to: - Participate in live **radio events** and **competitions**. - Join emergency communication drills (where radio skills could actually **save lives**). - Get involved in **public service events** like marathons or disaster relief. **Ready to Start?** If you think ham radio sounds cool (because it totally is), talk to your local Pathfinder club or contact us, to find out more, as well as look up an amateur radio group in your area. They’ll help you get started, whether you’re aiming for a license or just want to explore the basics. So, are you ready to **get on the air** and connect with the world? 🚀📡 ## Posts ### AARAI August 2026 Newsletter URL: https://aarai.net/aarai-august-2026-newsletter/ Last updated: 2026-09-01T03:06:19.000Z --- ### AARAI Newsletter Reception Data URL: https://aarai.net/aarai-newsletter-reception-data/ Last updated: 2026-08-31T00:26:58.000Z --- **August 30, 2026** --- ### AARAI July 2026 Newsletter URL: https://aarai.net/aarai-july-2026-newsletter/ Last updated: 2026-07-30T05:07:02.000Z [AARAI Newsletter July 2026AARAI Newsletter July 2026.pptx61 KBdownload-circle](https://aarai.net/content/files/2026/07/AARAI-Newsletter-July-2026-1.pptx "Download") --- Greetings to All Our Worldwide AARAI Members, I hope this post finds all is well with each of you and your families and that you are finding the time to have a daily “QSO” with the Lord, asking Him to put His spirit in you to show you His way that He would have you to walk, leading you into all truth. So we've sifted through various educational materials and gathered some valuable EmComm resources to help you get started and become better prepared for emergency communication and public service events. The ARRL offers two excellent, free, EmComm courses designed specifically for amateur radio operators. You can progress through the material at your leisure. I'm currently working through the coursework myself, and can highly recommend it! **Available Courses:** **1\. Basic EmComm** [https://learn.arrl.org/courses/67044](https://learn.arrl.org/courses/67044?ref=aarai.net) **2\. Intermediate EmComm** [https://learn.arrl.org/courses/68230](https://learn.arrl.org/courses/68230?ref=aarai.net) You do not need to be an ARRL member to participate—simply create a free account to access the training courses. **How to Get Started:** - Visit the links above. - Create your free ARRL account if you haven't already. - Complete the courses at your convenience. The courses above will equip you with foundational knowledge and skills. If you are enjoying what you are learning, you might want to go ahead and quality for ARES (Amateur Radio Emergency Service) membership. This typically involves taking an additional 5, free online courses, although the precise coursework prerequisites are ultimately up to the local ARES chapter you wish to join. **3 - FEMA Introduction to the Incident Command System** [IS-100.c-ICS-100 Introduction to Incident Command System](https://training.fema.gov/is/courseoverview.aspx?code=IS-100.c&ref=aarai.net) **4 - FEMA Basic Incident Command System for Initial Response** [IS-200.c-ICS-200 for Single Incidents and Initial Action Incidents](http://training.fema.gov/EMIWeb/IS/IS200b.asp?ref=aarai.net) **5 - FEMA National Incident Management System** [IS-700.b NIMS: An Introduction](http://training.fema.gov/EMIWeb/IS/IS700a.asp?ref=aarai.net) **6 - FEMA National Response Framework** [IS-800.c National Response Framework](http://training.fema.gov/EMIWeb/IS/IS800b.asp?ref=aarai.net) **7 - SKYWARN** [https://www.meted.ucar.edu/education\_training/course/23](https://www.meted.ucar.edu/education%5Ftraining/course/23?ref=aarai.net) For those who finish the coursework, please email vp@aarai.net and let me know. If you wish, we'll include you in a database of trained club members who are willing and available to assist with communications during emergencies. If there is sufficient interest in completing the training material, we may look into holding regular AARAI EmComm drills. Feel free to reach out if you have questions or need assistance! Daniel in the lions’ den is the same Daniel who stood before the king, encircled by the light of God. Paul in the dark dungeon, awaiting the sentence which he knew was to come from the cruel Nero, is the same Paul who addressed the court of the Areopagus. A man whose heart is stayed upon God in the hour of his most afflicting trials and most discouraging surroundings, is just what he was in prosperity, when the light and favor of God seemed to be upon him. Faith reaches to the unseen, and grasps eternal things..."
