Ever wondered what it’s like to talk to someone halfway across the world—without a phone or internet? That’s exactly what ham radio (a.k.a. amateur radio) lets you do! The Pathfinder program has an awesome "Radio" honor that introduces you to the world of wireless communication. And guess what? It’s not just about chatting—it’s about building cool skills, helping your community, and even being ready for emergencies.
You have two ways to get this honor:
Option 1: Get Your Amateur Radio License!
- Study some basic electronics, radio operating rules, and safety guidelines.
- Take and pass the Technician Class Amateur Radio License test.
- Boom! Now you’re legally allowed to talk to people on amateur radio frequencies! (Yes, this includes people worldwide.)
Detailed requirements can be found on this Pathfinder Wiki.
Option 2: The No-License Route
- If getting a license isn’t your thing, you can complete 15 alternative requirements instead.
- You’ll learn about radio waves, the phonetic alphabet (you know, Alpha, Bravo, Charlie…) and the basics of how radios work.
- These alternative requirements are outlined by the General Conference Youth Ministries.
Why Bother? What’s in It for You?
Benefits of Earning the Radio Honor:
- Skill Development: Pathfinders gain technical expertise in radio operations, electronics, and communication protocols.
- Community Service: Licensed amateur radio operators can assist in emergency communications during disasters, providing a valuable service to their communities.
- Global Connection: Ham radio offers the opportunity to communicate with individuals worldwide, fostering a sense of global camaraderie.
- Personal Growth: The process of studying for the license and engaging in radio operations builds discipline, confidence, and problem-solving skills.
Ham Radio in Action: Real-World Fun
In North America, lots of Pathfinder clubs work with local amateur radio groups, giving you a chance to:
- Participate in live radio events and competitions.
- Join emergency communication drills (where radio skills could actually save lives).
- Get involved in public service events like marathons or disaster relief.
